Each year, Hunger Action Month™ offers an opportunity for community to come together to address food insecurity in the cities and towns where we live, work, and play. Our neighbors need your help to set the table. ​Donate today for groceries, meals, and more tomorrow. THANK YOU!

In 2023, The Open Door helped stabilize the lives and health of 9,836 people from 4,952 households through the distribution of 1.98 million pounds of food.

Volunteer

From volunteering in our Fulfillment Center, to delivering meals and groceries, to corporate engagement, to sorting donations at Second Glance, there’s a volunteer opportunity for everyone. Click here to learn more.

Wear Orange

The color used to raise hunger awareness, wear orange this month.

ORDER the HUNGER ACTION MONTH™ special item on the menu at one of the below eateries this month!

  • Brothers Brew in Rockport will offer a vanilla donut frosted with orange sprinkles starting Sept. 8 for Hunger Action Month 
  • Cake Ann will offer special creamsicle and chocolate orange flavored cupcakes to help raise hunger awareness starting Sept. 1 
  • The Cut will offer a Hunger Action Month cocktail 
  • Holy Cow’s Gloucester location on Pleasant Street will serve an Orange Creamsicle flavored ice cream starting 9/5
  • The James in Essex will offer a Hunger Action Month dessert starting the weekend of 9/7
  • Turtle Alley will offer chocolate bars embossed with the word “LOVE” 

*A portion of proceeds will support hunger-relief programs of The Open Door

Watch out for Hunger Action Month themed coasters at 1606 Restaurant & Oyster Bar, the Seaport Grille, The James and The Cut to donate! 

The Beauport Hotel will also be lit up with orange lights all month long.

SHOUT OUT and THANK YOU to the community partners helping us spread hunger awareness this month:

  • GLOUCESTER MAYOR GREG VERGA will sign a proclamation naming September Hunger Action Month™ at the Thrift the Runway Fashion Show on 9/8
  • GLOUCESTER CITY COUNCIL will wear orange at their September 10 meeting
  • GLOUCESTER CITY HALL and the BEAUPORT HOTEL will be lit up with orange lights all month long
