  • Schedule: 30 hours/week, Mon-Fri 9am-3pm
  • Pay Rate: $18/hour
  • Benefits: Prorated; health/dental not included
  • Supervisor: Food Acquisition Manager

Responsibilities

The Warehouse Assistant is responsible to assist the Food Acquisition Manager in the smooth operation of the warehouse, the exterior walk-in freezer, a walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer. This position also provides support to the fulfillment center activities of picking and packing customized pantry orders.

Warehouse Operations

  1. Identify and prepare space needed for incoming loads.
    • Make sure the loading dock is clear and organized, the processing center is clear of clutter, and the dollies are folded and neatly placed at scale.
  2. Receive all incoming goods.
    • Any incoming donations need to be weighed and logged into the database.
    • Operate pallet jack and pallet stacker.
    • Any incoming food rescue needs to be weighed and logged into the database.
    • Quality check all incoming produce. Inform Warehouse Coordinator of any problems.
  3. Store all goods in an organized manner allowing for FIFO distribution.
    • Identify parts of load that require additional dry storage next door and facilitate using the FIFO method.
    • Label any product that is needed to be saved for a specific program request, pantry need, mobile market hold or collaborative partner.
  4. Supervisor warehouse volunteers.
  5. Retrieve food from storage, walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer for food pantry and all nutrition programs as requested.
  6. Pack food for delivery and load onto vans and trucks.
  7. Participate in pantry stocking with specific attention to reach-in freezer, dairy and produce coolers.
  8. Stack pallets and palletize banana boxes to be sent to The Second Glance.
  9. Take notice of any cardboard, trash or compost that needs to be emptied. Food waste needs to be recorded and spoiled out of SmartChoice.
  10. Take notice of any floors, sinks or countertops that need to be cleaned.
  11. Perform deliveries of product, meals, and customized groceries as requested.

Fulfillment Center

  • Prepare online orders received through SmartChoice, for delivery and pickup
    • Assist volunteers picking orders
    • Hand off packed orders to drivers and/or clients and help load into vehicles
    • Hand off pickup order to the food pantry staff

Volunteer Management

  • Provide ongoing volunteer feedback and correction as necessary
  • Support volunteers and make sure they are using Trauma Informed Care principles when interacting with clients or customers.

Special Events

  • Food drives
    • Holiday food drives
    • Letter Carriers’ food drive
    • Other food drives scheduled throughout the year
    • Empty Bowl dinner
    • Autumn Breakfast
    • Holiday Meal Distributions

Food Pick-ups

  • Greater Boston Food Bank, Amazon Fresh, Trader Joe’s, local pick-ups as needed.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, and talk or hear.
  • The employee must be able to push/pull bins of up to 400 pounds.
  • The employee may be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to distinguish basic colors and the ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus.

  8. The ability to lift 50 lb boxes and to carry equipment and supplies.
  9. Able to operate an electric pallet jack and pallet stacker.
  10. Excellent customer service skills and a hospitable and patient demeanor.
  11. CPR and First Aid Certified (will train)
  12. ServSafe Certified (will train)
  13. 5S Certified (will train)
  14. A valid Dot Card (will train)
