Pantry Assistant – ESL Support

  • 35 hours/week, $18/hour
  • Monday – Friday 8:30am – 4:00pm

The Pantry Assistant is responsible for supporting Food Pantry operations, including opening, stocking and cold packing orders, distributing groceries and meals to clients, and cleaning. This position also provides oversight to volunteers and may assist in the Fulfillment Center with the packing of orders and stocking of Corner Market, as needed.

Fulfillment Center

  1. Open the pantry in the morning:
    • Review volunteer and client schedules
    • Update whiteboard with instructions and messaging for staff and volunteers
    • Organize orders to be cold packed by appointment time
  2. Stocking and cold packing orders:
    • Work with Warehouse and FFC to stock and label all product needed that day
    • Prioritize orders for cold packing by appointment time
    • Organize carriages with complete orders
    • Maintain temp control on all packed orders
      • Put all product back to its respective temperature holding place after 60 minutes
      • Place reminder calls to tardy clients
      • Break down no-show orders
  3. Distributing groceries and meals to client:
    • Provide world class customer service at the door
    • Preorder pickup
      • Retrieve order, troubleshoot as necessary, and direct client to Corner Market
      • Assist client with loading groceries into car, as needed
      • Hold late pick-ups under temp control and follow all safe food guidelines for storage
      • Follow communication procedures for notifying late clients
    • Walk-in Clients
      • Assist clients at the curbside pantry who have not placed a preorder
      • Triage clients who need to place an immediate order by phone or device
      • Provide technical assistance as needed or enter order for client into iPad
      • Coach customers on placing preorders
    • Reach out to appropriate staff for customers that arrive for other than a food order
    • Verify all orders are packed on time and communicate any special needs with FFC
  4. Keep space clean:
    • Remove trash and cardboard as needed
    • Weigh and log food waste before removing to compost bins
    • Follow daily cleaning procedures including spot sweeping or spot mopping, cleaning shelves and produce bins in refrigerators, cleaning glass doors refrigerators and freezers. Keep all areas tidy.
    • Observe that all pantry equipment is functioning properly
    • Report any repair needs to Manager

Volunteer Oversight

  1. Training
    • Onboard new placed volunteers in the Food Pantry
    • Provide daily volunteer instructions and messaging
    • Maintain ongoing volunteer training and correction
      • Intervene as necessary when a volunteer is not engaged or following instructions
    • Answer all questions
  2. Oversight
    • Oversee special groups in the Food Pantry
    • Assist volunteers when product is missing, not clearly labeled, or an item needs to be substituted
    • Delegate tasks to volunteers at every opportunity
    • Support volunteers using Trauma Informed Care principles

Special Events

  1. Food drives
    • Holiday food drives
    • Letter Carriers’ food drive
    • Other food drives scheduled throughout the year
    • Empty Bowl dinner
    • Holiday Meal Distributions

  8. The ability to lift 50 lb boxes and to carry equipment and supplies.
  9. Able to operate an electric pallet jack.
  10. Excellent customer service skills and a hospitable and patient demeanor.
  11. 5S Certified (will train)
