  • 20 hours/week
  • 9:00am – 1:00pm Monday – Friday
  • some weekends & weeknights required

Reporting to the Assistant Warehouse Manager, the Food Rescue Assistant is responsible for picking up and transporting food donations to The Open Door, in compliance with Health Department regulations, and delivering product orders to Collaborative Meals partners. This position also supports other programs as needed, including but not limited to: Warehouse, Grocery and Meal Deliveries, Fulfillment Center, Mobile Market (as time permits during staff shortages).

Core Responsibilities:

  • Food Rescue:
    • Complete vehicle inspection prior to loading and report any problems or damage to supervisor.
    • Load folding cart on van.
    • Load van with appropriate number of banana boxes for collection.
    • Obey rules of the road and practice courtesy toward other drivers
    • Pick up food donation: inspect for quality and reject unsafe food (such as compromised packaging, foul odors, or lack of temperature control)
    • Secure donation in vehicle and complete remaining stops.
    • Return to The Open Door and unload.

  • Collaborative Meals:
    • Pack institutional orders with consideration to temp control
    • Load order on vehicle and deliver to partner organizations
    • Assist sites with unloading order

Other Program Coverage (including but not limited to):

  1. Opening and closing programs and/or areas of the building
  2. Warehouse:
    • Make sure the loading dock is clear and organized, the processing center is clear of clutter, and the dollies are folded and neatly placed at scale.
    • Any incoming donations and food rescue need to be weighed and logged into the database.
    • Operate pallet jack
    • Quality check all incoming produce. Inform Warehouse Asst. Manager of any problems.
    • Store all goods in an organized manner allowing for FIFO distribution.
    • Label any product that is needed to be saved for a specific program request, pantry need, mobile market hold or collaborative partner.
    • Retrieve food from storage, walk-in cooler and walk-in freezer for food pantry and all nutrition programs as requested.
    • Pack food for delivery and load onto vans and trucks.
    • Participate in pantry stocking with specific attention to reach-in freezer, dairy and produce coolers.
    • Stack pallets and palletize banana boxes
    • Take notice of any cardboard, trash or compost that needs to be emptied. Food waste needs to be weighed and logged in the database prior to dumping (red trash barrel)
    • Take notice of any floors, sinks or countertops that need to be cleaned
  3. Grocery and Meal Deliveries:
    • Assist with loading the appropriate vehicle
    • Adhere to scheduled times
    • Follow all client delivery instructions
  4. Fulfillment Center:
    • Pack orders with consideration to temp control
    • Assist volunteers picking orders, and when product is missing, not clearly labeled, or an item needs to be substituted
    • Oversee storage of deliveries on rolling shelving units (Ipswich) and u-boats (Gloucester)
  5. Mobile Market
    • Work with Mobile Market Coordinator and Warehouse Coordinator to fill orders ensuring market designated product is used
    • Keep Farmers’ Truck bays full of all products for the duration of the market for maximum appeal
    • Run mobile markets, gathering all data and supplying it for proper reporting
    • Break down Farmers Truck neatly after each event(s) using original packaging when possible
    • Modify SmartChoice institutional order to reflect actual distribution and update inventory.
    • Dispose of any trash or cardboard to its appropriate receptacle

Special Events:

  1. Food drives
    • Holiday food drives
    • Letter Carriers’ food drive
    • Catch a Ton of Tuna
    • Other food drives scheduled throughout the year
  2. Other special events
    • Empty Bowl dinner
    • Autumn Breakfast
  3. Assist with community outreach events and Corporate or institutional community service days

Staff Meetings: Attend department meetings as required

  • Excellent customer service skills and a hospitable and patient demeanor.
  • CPR and First Aid Certified
  • ServSafe food handlers certified
